Cork Christmas Count-Down – Conna Day Care Centre

Opened in 2005, Conna Day Care Centre is a service ran by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, the leading provider of dementia-specific services in Ireland.  The Alzheimer Society’s network includes over 120 dementia specific services such as day care centres, home care services, carer support groups, social clubs, Alzheimer cafes and two respite centres. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland also operates the Alzheimer National Helpline Service.

Conna Day Care Centre’s services provide person centred support and care, where the person with dementia and their family are placed at the centre of the service so that they are actively involved in making decisions.

Adam recently spoke to Dympna Howard, who gave a bit more information about the centre, and their desire to take on volunteers to enhance their services.

Conna Day Care Centre operates two days a week, Wednesdays and Fridays. Wednesdays are dementia-specific days while Fridays are for the elderly in the community.

Dympna spoke of how she would love to have volunteers that will come in on these days, and help with activities in the centre, engaging with the services users and supporting the carers.

Visiting volunteers could call in for an hour and chat with the clients, or read the newspapers with them. While activity volunteers could prepare activities like knitting, music, bingo, cards or puzzles.

This is a fantastic opportunity for people in the locality to get involved and support the wonderful work being done by the staff in the centre.
