Cork Couple Win Volunteer Ireland Award

Cork Volunteer Centre would like to extend a huge congratulations to Alfie and Marcie Street, winners in Volunteer Ireland’s Children and Youth category at the Volunteer Ireland Awards last week.

Hosting children from Chernobyl since 1997, their work with Chernobyl Children International and their radiating kindness and generosity have  continuously impacted the lives of  the many children and young adults they have come in contact with over the years.

Alfie has travelled to the devastated region eighteen times already, helping with building projects, medical convoys and driving an ambulance across Europe to Belarus to help alleviate the suffering of those caught up in the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

According to CCI, “No statistics do justice to the efforts that this husband and wife super team give to CCI every year. They have stood with collection buckets in rain on street corners in the dead of winter, they have given up their Christmas Eves to wrap presents for donations, driven trucks in ice cold treacherous condition across countries, knocked on doors and asked for help not for themselves but for the children of Chernobyl.”

“Alfie and Marcie Street were among the first families in Ireland to open their doors, hearts and homes to these extraordinary children but they were not the last. Alfie has often been known to say that ‘You can’t change the world but you can help these children’. By the end of their holidays in Ireland they’re like different children we might not have sunshine but we have the heart.”

Speaking of the achievement, Cork Volunteer Centre’s acting manager, Joanna Karolini said: “Congratulations to Alfie and Marcie! Hundreds of nominations were sent in and out of 11 winners, 2 of those were from Cork. It just serves to highlight the great culture of volunteering that we have in Cork. Alfie and Marcie are a real credit to the county, along with all of our nominees from Cork. Volunteers are so selfless and giving that their immense contribution often goes unnoticed. We are delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate these volunteers and above all else, say thank you for all that they do”
